The Importance of Food Grade Grease in Manufacturing

In food and beverage manufacturing, lubrication is one of those essential maintenance tasks that can easily go unnoticed until something goes wrong. Machinery needs grease to keep bearings, gears, slides, pivots and other moving components operating smoothly. However, when that machinery is being used in a food processing environment, choosing any standard industrial grease is not enough. The lubricant must be suitable for the environment and, where there is a possibility of contact with food, appropriately classified.

This is where food grade grease comes in!

At Lubricants SW Limited, we supply a comprehensive range of Food Safe Lubricants for demanding applications across the food, beverage, pharmaceutical and other hygiene-sensitive industries. Our range includes specialist food grade greases, direct food contact products, food grade sealants and oxygen-compatible grease for particularly tough environments.

What Is Food Grade Grease?

Food grade grease is a specialist lubricant designed for use in places where food is processed, prepared or handled. It provides the same fundamental job as conventional grease by decreasing friction, protecting components from wear and helping machinery operate reliably, but it is formulated with food safety requirements in mind. One of the most important distinctions to understand is that food grade does not simply mean that a grease is safe to eat. The correct classification depends on how and where the product is being used. For example, NSF H1 registration applies to lubricants used in food processing areas where incidental food contact may occur. This means that small amounts of lubricant could potentially come into contact with food during normal operation. It does not mean the lubricant is intended to be deliberately added to food. For this reason, selecting the correct food grade grease should always form part of a wider lubrication and food safety procedure.

Why Is Food Grade Grease Important?

Food processing machinery often operates in conditions that are particularly challenging for lubricants. High temperatures, water washout, heavy loads, frequent cleaning and continuous operation can all put additional demands on grease. At the same time, contamination must be carefully controlled. Using a suitable food-grade grease helps protect machinery against friction, wear, corrosion and water washout while reducing the potential risk associated with lubricant contamination. This can support a manufacturer’s wider HACCP and Good Manufacturing Practice procedures.

The right grease can also extend component life and improve machinery effectiveness. In a busy production environment, preventing unnecessary equipment failure can significantly reduce maintenance requirements and downtime.

Choosing the Right Food Grade Grease

Not every food grade grease is designed for the same application! The correct choice depends on numerous factors, including the component being lubricated, operating temperature, load, speed and exposure to water or cleaning chemicals. The potential for food contact and the required NSF classification must also be considered. Lubricants SW supplies a range of food-grade greases designed for different operating conditions. This includes Petro-Canada PURITY FG2 Grease, PURITY FG2 Synthetic Grease, PURITY FG2 Synthetic Heavy 220 and PURITY FG2 Extreme Grease.

For particularly demanding applications, PURITY FG2 Synthetic Heavy 220 is designed to provide strong protection against wear and lubricant breakdown, with resistance to water washout and operating temperatures ranging from -25°C to 200°C. Its ‘tackified’ formulation helps the grease stay in place under heavy loads and tough conditions. This highlights an important point about food-grade grease. Food safety is only one part of the decision. The grease still needs to perform properly in the machinery and working environment where it is being used.

Food Grade Grease for Direct Food Contact Applications

There are also applications where the possibility of food contact is much greater. Lubricants SW’s Direct Food Contact range includes FoodGuard 3H and FoodGuard 3H Aerosol. These products are designed for applications involving direct food contact and use ingredients approved for the relevant application. This is an important distinction when selecting a lubricant. Don’t choose a product simply because it is described as food safe. Its exact classification and designated use have to correspond to the application. For businesses operating under HACCP procedures (as we previously mentioned) or preparing for food industry audits, keeping clear records and using the right lubricant for each lubrication point can support a controlled maintenance process.

Food Grade Sealants Have a Role to Play Too

Although it is an important part, grease is only one part of a food-safe maintenance programme. Seals, joints, and connections can also require products suitable for use around food processing equipment. Lubricants SW supplies a range of Food Grade Sealants, including products from recognised manufacturers such as Dow Corning, Detectasil and Trade Mate. These sealants are designed for demanding food processing environments in which resistance to dampness, heat and cleaning chemicals can be important. Using the correct sealant alongside the correct food-grade grease can help businesses take a more complete approach to equipment maintenance. It is not simply about keeping moving parts lubricated.

What About Oxygen-Compatible Food Grade Grease?

Some applications require something more specialised again.

Lubricants SW’s oxygen-compatible grease category includes FS Dura-Tech, a high-performance perfluoroether grease designed for extreme conditions. It is NSF H1 Registered, made with FDA-listed ingredients and suitable for oxygen-rich environments. It operates from -25°C to +300°C and is designed for applications involving high loads, continuous high temperatures, harsh chemicals, vacuum, and oxygen-rich environments.

One particularly interesting application is diving equipment.

FS Dura-Tech suits ‘critical applications’, including diving valves. This makes sense where parts may need reliable lubrication in harsh conditions and where compatibility with oxygen-rich environments is an important consideration. The grease is also suitable for lubricating bearings, slides and pivot points, including applications involving plastics and elastomers. It is a good example of why specialist grease selection matters. The right product is not necessarily the one designed for the most common application. It is the one that fits the conditions the equipment will actually experience.
